Porsche Just Reclaimed The Nürburgring Lap Record With The 911 GT2 RS

Porsche has once again topped the best cars in the world to claim the fastest lap time at the Nürburg ring, and it did it with their flagship machine, the 911.

The Nürburgring is a hot spot for any car company to showcase just how ridiculous their car is. It’s an incredibly impractical way to evaluate a car’s merits, and yet we LOVE to see them do it. Everything about the ‘Green Hell’ is entertaining. With 73 corners spanning 12.8-miles of gorgeous track, it is as challenging as it gets. And up until now Lamborghini had the latest track record.

Porsche was the first to build a production car to lap the ‘Ring in under 7-minutes time. Then Lamborghini came out last year and blew that away with a 6:52.01, thanks to their Huracan Performante. That left it up to Porsche to end the feud once and for all, so instead of a 918 successor, they did it with their modern 911. And they didn’t just beat it, they annihilated the record with a 6-minute and 47.3-second lap. This puts the new 911 GT2 RS a massive 5-seconds ahead of the Lambo, and it gives the crown back to Porsche.

To further rub salt in the wound, Porsche’s head of Motorsport had a few choice things to say about the attempt. “At the start of the development process, we set ourselves a lap time target for the GT2 RS of less than 7 minutes and 5 seconds,” says Frank-Steffen Walliser. Basically he’s saying that the team didn’t even intend to break the record, instead shooting for a goal 17-seconds off from what they accomplished. If that isn’t a smack in the face to everything Lamborghini went through to get that record, I don’t know what is. Check out the full lap below.
