Take a Look Back to 1983 When this Porsche 956 Ran the Fastest Ever Lap Time at the Nurburgring

The Nurburgring is one of the ultimate race tracks in the world. It’s the place where almost every car manufacturer tests their cars to make sure they have optimal performance. If you can pull down a quick lap time at “the Ring,” that speaks volumes in regards to the cars “street cred.” Over the past couple years we’ve seen the production lap record change hands from the Porsche 918 to the Lamborghini Huracan Performance, then to the NIO EP9 electric car and now the McLaren P1 LM. But what about the overall record, street car or not?

That particular record was set back in 1983 when a 25-year-old racing driver by the name Stefan Bellof drove a Porsche 956 and set a blistering lap time of 6 minutes 11 seconds. As a point of comparison, the McLaren P1 LM’s record time is 6 minutes 43 seconds, and even with the track being 12.9 miles long a difference of roughly 32 seconds may as well be a lifetime. Check out this vintage footage of the lap record set so many years ago.
